Flashcards in Composite Materials Deck (10):
1

What is a Composite Material?

Material made from 2 or more different materials, with different properties to those of the materials

2

What do many Composite materials consist of?

Fibres embedded in a polymer resin

3

Why do many composite materials consist of fibres embedded in polymer resin?

Fibres have low density and high densile strength but are brittle
Resin is hardwearing but not strong
Means material is strong, lightweight, hard

4

What does Fibreglass consist of?

Glass fibres in resin

5

What does carbon fibre consist of?

Carbon fibres in resin

6

What does Concrete consist of?

Aggregate (small stones)
Sand
Cement
Water is added to bind ingredients together

7

What are the properties of Concrete?

High compressive strength
Low tensile strength

8

What material is embedded into Concrete to increase the tensile strength?

Steel Rods
makes Steel-reinforced concrete with high compressive strength and high tensile strength

9

What is Plywood?

A composite material with thin sheets of wood glued together in layers
Grain in each layer is set at right angles to layer below

10

What is the benefit of having the grains at right angles in Plywood?

material resists bending in both directions
