Flashcards in Conceptual Physics-Laws of Motion Unit-Newton's Laws 1/2, Acceleration, and Center of Mass Deck (13):
change in velocity; speed up; slow down; change direction; stop moving; start moving
Newton's First Law
When forces are balanced, an object at rest will remain at rest, and an object in motion will remain in motion with constant speed in a straight line path.
the natural tendency of an object to stay at rest or stay in motion
How is mass related to inertia
There is a direct relationship between mass and inertia; mass is a measure of inetia
What is the unit for acceleration?
m/s/s or m/s^2
meters per second per second
What is the formula for acceleration?
acceleration=change in velocity over time
or acceleration=end speed minus start speed over time
What is the acceleration of any object due to gravity?
10 m/s/s (exactly 9.8 m/s/s)
newton's Second Law
Objects accelerate when an unbalanced force is applied, in the same direction as and at a speed proportional to the force
Does Newton's Second Law relate to balanced or unbalanced forces?
Give examples from sports when Newton's first and second laws apply.
Examples: Note- First Law must have all balanced forces, aka, no acceleration except for gravity, Second Law must have an unbalanced force currently being applied.
What do you need to balance an object?
You need to support it under it's center of mass.
Center of Mass
the point at which all the mass of the object is considered to be concentrated for calculations concerning the motion of the object
