Flashcards in Condensation Polymers Deck (16):
What are Condensation reactions?
Reaction in which 2 molecules react together to form one larger molecule and one smaller molecule, (usually water or hydrogen chloride)
What do Carboxylic Acids form when they react with Alcohols?
Esters (organic compounds)
What is the word equation for the condensation reaction between Ethanoic Acid and Ethanol?
Ethanoic Acid + Ethanol -> Ethyl Ethanoate + Water
What is the chemical equation for the condensation reaction between Ethanoic Acid and Ethanol?
CH COOH + C H OH -.>
3 2 5
CH COOC H + H O
3 2 5 2
What is the functional group symbol of an Ester?
What are Condensation Polymers?
Polymers formed by condensation reactions
What does a monomer molecule for a condensation polymer need? Why?
It needs 2 different functional groups
One at each end
What are the two different functional groups of an Amino Acid monomer that forms a Protein polymer?
an Amino group -NH
a carboxyl group -COOH
What happens between the two functional groups to form the Protein?
The amino group of one molecule reacts with the carboxyl group of another molecule
The product formed still has an amino group and carboxyl group so can join with 2 more amino acids
Process continues, forming long polmer molecule
What are the remaining parts of a monomer joined by when there is a condensation reaction to form a polymer?
An amide group -CONH
What are the two main types of artificial condensation polymer?
What are Polyesters made from?
Carboxylic acid with two carboxyl groups
Alcohol with two hydroxyl groups
Why are Polyesters called polyesters?
Because they contain many ester groups -COO-
What are Polyamides made from?
Carboxylic Acid with two carboxyl groups
an 'amine' with 2 amino groups
Why are Polyamides called polyamides?
They contain many amide groups -CONH-
