What are Condensation reactions?

Reaction in which 2 molecules react together to form one larger molecule and one smaller molecule, (usually water or hydrogen chloride)

Esters (organic compounds)

Ethanoic Acid + Ethanol -> Ethyl Ethanoate + Water

It needs 2 different functional groups
One at each end

an Amino group -NH
2
a carboxyl group -COOH

What happens between the two functional groups to form the Protein?

The amino group of one molecule reacts with the carboxyl group of another molecule
The product formed still has an amino group and carboxyl group so can join with 2 more amino acids
Process continues, forming long polmer molecule
