Flashcards in Connective Tissue Deck (19):
1

Connective tissue function

-Binds together and supports other organs
- protects and insulates organs
- compartmentalises structures
- is the bodies major transport system (blood)

2

Main types of connective tissue

Bone
Cartilage
Blood
Fibrous

3

Connective tissue is made up of:

- ground substances
- fibres
- cells

4

Ground substance

The material that supports the cells and fibres

5

Different kind of fibres in connective tissue

- protein fibres
- collagen fibres
- elastin fibres
- reticular fibres

6

Protein fibres

- protein fibres support the connective tissue

7

Collagen fibres

collagen fibres provide toughness and strength

8

Elastin fibres

elastin fibres provide stretch and recoil (elasticity)

9

Resticular fibres

reticular fibres provide support and attachment

10

Loose areolar connective tissue function

Wraps and cushions organs;
Plays important role in inflammation;
Holds and conveys tissue fluid

11

Adipose tissue function

Provides reserve food fuel, insulates against heat loss; supports and protects organs

12

Dense regular connective tissue function

Attaches muscles to bones or bones to bones. Withstand great tensile stress when pulling force is applied in one direction

13

Dense irregular connective tissue function

Able to withstand tension exerted in many directions; provides structural strength

14

Dense regular connective tissue (elastic) function

Allows recoil of tissue following stretching; maintains pulsatile flow of blood through arteries

15

Hyaline cartilage function

Supports and reinforces; has resilient cushioning properties; resist compressive stress

16

Elastic cartilage function

Maintains the shape of a structure while allowing great flexibility

17

Fibrocartilage function

Tensile strength with the ability to absorb compressive shock

18

Bone function

Supports and protects
Stores calcium and other minerals and fat
Marrow inside bone is site for blood cell formation

19

Blood function

Transport of respiration gases, nutrients, wastes and other substances.
