What is constipation?
Presence of dried impeacher faeces within the colon
What causes constipation?
Obstruction of faecal movement
Hirschprung disease - absence of ganglia of the enteric nervous system.
What are symptoms of constipation?
Loss of appetite
What is one cause of appendicitis related to faeces?
Calcified faeces in the appendix.
What are laxatives?
Treat the constipation
- These increase intestinal peristalsis.
- Soften Faeces
(However may cause loss of Hypokalaemia)
These should be given when:
Straining will cause damage
Treat drug induced constipation/bedridden
What are a purgatives?
Completely clean the large bowel
What are the types of laxatives?
How do bulk laxatives work?
Indigestible pylorus with Beta 1 linkage that cannot be attacked by digestive enzymes. Stimulate peristalsis
How do Osmotic laxatives work?
Poorly absorbed salts. Draws water across the freely impermeable wall of the intestine.
e.g. Magnesium sulphate
How do Faecal softeners work?
Make the stool slippy
e.g. Docusate sodium, Parafin
