What are the adverse effects of the combined oral contraceptive pill COCP?

Venous thromboembolism : (VTE in 2nd generation pills 1.5/1,000 - greater risk than pregnant women
HTN, migraines
Break through bleeding, spotting

Interaction with courses of antibiotics - inform patients about the use of condoms


Which cancers are associated with COCP use?

There is an increased risk of breast and cervical cancer

The COCP provides some protection against ovarian and endometrial cancer


What are the adverse effects of the progesterone only pill?

Menstrual irregularities, poor cycle control - most common irregular bleeding
NV headaches
Increased appetite, breast tenderness
