You can transfer germs, and when others touch the surface they’re at risk of an infection.
What are the three senses you should rely on when assessing an emergency scene?
SIGHT-SMELL-HEARING
What are some examples of unusual odors you might smell that could signal a dangerous situation?
Chemical or other noxious smell
What types of unusual noises might alert you that someone needs help?
Screaming, crashing, or crying
What unusual behaviors or appearances might you notice that indicate a person is in distress?
moaning, staggering, appearing unresponsive, and clutching their throat.
What should you check for when you arrive at the scene of an emergency?
Check for safety
What information should you give when obtaining consent to help someone?
Who you are, and that you are trained and what you plan to do
What should you do if the person cannot give consent and no parent or guardian is present?
Consent is implied, take action
When checking an unresponsive person, what life-threatening conditions should you look for?
Breathing, life-threatening bleeding, etc
What is the SHOUT-TAP-SHOUT method and when do you use it?
This method helps to check if a person is responsive and conscious.
Shout the adult or child’s name, tap them on the shoulder or their arm, and shout again.
How does the SHOUT-TAP-SHOUT method differ for infants compared to adults?
For an infant(Baby) shout their name, tap them on the bottom of their foot, and shout their name again.
What dose SAM stand for?
Signs and symptoms
Allergies
Medication and medical conditions
Why is it important to ask SAM questions as early as possible in an emergency?
As time goes on the person may be less able to say things you may be able to gather the information that others might not be able to later
Why is it important to assign one specific person to call 911 rather than shouting it out to a group?
So you know who made the call and that it gets done.
What emergency equipment should you try to get when calling for help?
(AED, a first aid kit, and a bleeding control kit)
How should you give care during an emergency?
- Give care consistent with your knowledge and training
- offer to assist the person with medication administration
- help the person rest in the most comfortable position
- keep the person from getting chilled or overheated
- reassure the person
- continue to watch for changes in the person’s condition
What should you do if the person who appears unresponsive is lying face down?
Check for responsiveness by calling 911 or telling someone to do so, and then roll the person onto their back to check for breathing
