fdisk

-Utility is used to create and manipulate partition tables.

-Does not support GUID Partition Table (GPT)

fdisk [-option] [disk name]
-l = list disk details
-n = Add a new parition
-p = Print the partition table
-v = Verify the partition table

sfdisk

Utility can be used to display and modify partitions.

-Does not support GPT

sfdisk [-option] [device]
-l = list partitions
-v = check consistency
-i = increment cylinders
-A[#] = Activate partiton #

partprobe

Updates kernel when partitions are changed

partprobe [-option] [devices]
-d = Cancel all updates
-s = Display summary
-v = Display version of probe

mkfs "Make Filesystem"

Used to build a filesystem on a storage device.

mkfs [-option] [-t type] [fs -option] device [size]
-j = journaling
-c = check for bad blocks
-L = filesystem label
-F = force filesystem creation on mounted partition
-i = set inode size
-S = rewrite the superblock

mkswap

Sets up a Linux swap area. First Step

swapon/swapoff

Turns swap area on/off. Second Step

parted

Utility can create/destroy/resize partitions.

-Supports GPT, and MS-DOS, etc.

parted [-options][device[command[options]]]
-i = interactive mode
-s = stop interactive mode
-l = list partition layout on all block devices
-v = display the version
-m = displays machine parseable output

Menu based tool interactive GUID manipulator.
