Data Analysis Flashcards
What is the level of significance that psychologists accept?
P=0.05 (5%)
0.05 is insignificant, accept null
What is nominal data?
Results can be categorised
What is ordinal data?
Results can be put in an order
E.g highest to lowest
What is interval data?
When there are equal intervals on a measurement scale and an official unit of measurement e.g cm
How do you pick an inferential test to use?
What type of data do I have?
Nominal= Chi-squared
Ordinal/Interval: is it an experiment or correlation?
Correlation= Spearman’s Rho
Experiment: what design was used?
Repeated= Wilcoxon
Independent measures= Mann-Whitney U
What is probability?
=a numerical measure of chance representing how likely it is that something will happen
0= an event won't happen 1= an event definitely will happen
What does p>0.05 mean?
The probability of results being due to chance is less than/ more than/ equal to 5%.
What is a type 1 error?
When you accept the alternate and reject the null but later realise it’s a mistake so you have to accept the null
What is a type 2 error?
When you accept the null and reject the alternate but later realise it’s a mistake so accept the alternate
