Deficiencies in plants Flashcards
(9 cards)
How plants get minerals
taken up from the soil through their roots
in fertilisers
Use of nitrates
As a supply of nitrogen, which is needed to make proteins for healthy growth
What a nitrate deficiency looks like
Leaves turn a pale green or yellow colour (because chlorophyll in leaves reduces)
Consequences of a nitrate deficiency
Without nitrates, the amount of
chlorophyll in leaves reduces. This reduces the plant’s ability to
photosynthesise and grow properly (reduces crop yields).
Use of magnesium
use magnesium ions to make chlorophyll
NPK fertiliser contains
- N - Nitrogen
- P - Phosphorus
- K - Potassium
What a magnesium deficiency looks like
Yellow leaves (because can’t make chlorophyll)
Consequences of magnesium deficiency
Can’t make chlorophyll so growth reduced
