Economic effects of aging
Burdens of independence- Hirsch 2016 for every 1 pensioner there was 3.2 people of working age
More pensioners and heathcare higher tax for working
Strain on public services- governments have to make cuts in local funding to provide for healthcare services
Effects of aging on families
One person pensioner housholds - may not have family to support (2013 3.6 million)
extended families- ecconomic pressure on younger memebers
Grandparenting- chambers, 2012 5.8 million looked after grandchildren on average 10 hours a week
Why aging pop is a problem
Agism- dicrimination in work and healthcare
strain on the NHS
Housing- older have assests like housed that they now keep for longer, cant home younger families as well as not affording
Why aging pop is NOT a problem
Chambers- they have been steryotyped as unproductive and dependant, can be a resource eg. grandparenting
Demographic change helps- more migrants of working age help the balance.
Andrew Blaikie- postmodern view new type of aging want to be healthy and active. products in the market direct this. - make profit from their needs.
