Subjunctive mood

In both English and German, the indicative mood is used to talk about real conditions or factual situations. The subjunctive mood is used to talk about unreal, hypothetical, or unlikely events as well as to express wishes and polite requests. Present-time subjunctive can refer to the future as well as to the present.

Würde construction

Form of würde + infinitive.
Ich würde
Du würdest
Er/sie/es würde
Wir würden
Ihr würdet
Sie/sie würden

Würde construction is most common way to express subjunctive mood in conversational German. Used to express hypothetical, wishes, polite requests, and contrary-to-facts conditions.

Present-time subjunctive of Sein and Haben

Sein- ich wäre
Du wärest
Er/sie/es wäre
Wir wären
Ihr wäret
Sie/sie wären

Haben- ich hätte
Du hättest
Er/sie/es hätte
Wir hätten
Ihr hättet
Sie/sie hätten

The subjunctive form of verbs is the simple Past tense + subjunctive endings. In addition, strong verbs add an umlaut to a, o, and u. Note that the subjunctive endings are identical to the simple past tense endings of weak verbs minus the -t.

Modals and wissen in present-time subjunctive

Dürfen- dürfte
Können- könnte
Mögen- möchte
Müssen- müsste
Sollen- sollte

Past-time subjunctive

The past-time subjunctive consists of the subjunctive forms of hätte or wäre + past participle of the main verb.
