Q

DKA

Define

A

BGL ^ 350
* not enough insulin
* brain ^ in glucose
* body cells use fats for energy
* Results in dehydration

(Diabetic Ketoacidosis)

Q

Define

HHNS

How does it differ from DKA

A

Hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic state
* Body can still produce and utilize enough insulin to prevent DKA but not hyperglycemia
* BGL > 700

Differs from DKA based on the presence of kussmaul respirations

16
Q

Diabetes

Define

A

Happens when theres a disturbance in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and protiens.
Primary causes
* Lack of insulin secreted by the pancreas
* Inability of the cell receptors to recognize the insulin and allow glucose to enter at a normal rate

17
Q

DKA

Symptoms

A

PBANKS TWD
polyuria
polyphagia
polydipsia
BGL >350
Abdominal pain/cramps
Nausea/vommiting
Kussmal breaths/ketones
Slow onset
Tachycardia
Weakness/Malaise
Dramatic weight loss

18
Q

HHNS

Symptoms

A

BGL >700
Same as DKA but NO kussmaul breaths or ketones
