Diabetes Flashcards
1
Q
What is type 1 diabetes?
A
Insulin production from the beta cells of the pancreas is defective (lower than the normal person).
2
Q
How is insulin production defective in type 1 diabetes?
A
Beta cells fail to develop or they are destroyed due to autoimmune disease or a viral infection.
3
Q
What is type 2 diabetes?
A
Insulin production by beta-cells is normal and there is a defect in the response of cells to insulin (plasma insulin is normal or high).
4
Q
What are normal glucose levels?
A
- Less than 6 mmol/L before the test
- Doesn’t exceed the renal threshold
- Less than 7.8 mmol/L two hours after the test
5
Q
What is renal threshold?
A
When glucose enters the urine.
6
Q
What are the results for impaired glucose tolerance?
A
- Between 6-7 mmol/L before the test
- Does/doesn’t exceed the renal threshold
- 7.9-11 mmol/L two hours after the test
7
Q
What is a diabetic response?
A
- More than 7 mmol/L before the test
- Exceeds the renal threshold
- More than 11 mmol/L two hours after the test
