digestive system Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is the role of the digestive system?
To break down large food molecules into smaller ones that can be absorbed into the blood.
Where is amylase produced in the body?
In the salivary glands and pancreas.
What does amylase break down, and into what?
Amylase breaks down starch into sugars (e.g. maltose).
Where does protease work in the digestive system?
In the stomach and small intestine.
What are proteins broken down into?
Amino acids.
What enzyme breaks down lipids (fats)?
Lipase
What are lipids broken down into?
Fatty acids and glycerol.
What is the function of bile?
It emulsifies fats and neutralises stomach acid.
Where is bile made and stored?
Made in the liver, stored in the gallbladder.
What is the role of the small intestine in digestion?
It completes digestion and absorbs nutrients into the blood.
Removes water from undigested food
Forms faeces
Faeces are then stored in the rectum and leave the body through the anus
what does the mouth do?
Mouth chews food and mixes it with saliva (contains enzymes like amalyse to start breaking down carbohydrates)
what does oesophagus do?
it pushes food to the stomach
what doe the stomach do?
stomach uses acids and enzymes (like protease) to break down proteins.
Stomach contains hydrochloric acid
what does the small intestine do?
small intestine digests food further (with help from liver and pancreas)
what does anus do?
anus is where feaces leave the body
