Digestive System Flashcards
What are ingestive feeders?
Ingest living or dead organisms, plants, or animals through a mouth
What are the 3 types of ingestive feeders?
Suspension feeders
Substrate feeders
Fluid feeders
What are suspension feeders
They extricate food suspended in surrounding water
Fish or clams
What are substrate feeders
Live in or on their food source
Caterpillars or worms
What are fluid feeders?
They extract nutrient-rich fluids from a living plant or animal host
Mosquitoes aphids
What are the 3 types of eaters?
Omnivores
Herbivores
Carnivores
What are omnivores
Eat plants and animals
What are herbivores?
Plant eaters
What are carnivores
Animal eaters
What are the four stages of food processing
Ingestion
Digestion
Absorption
Elimination
What is ingestion?
Taking food in through your mouth
What is digestion
Breaking down of the food molecules to small enough forms to be absorbed by the body.
Why are fats, proteins, and carbohydrates broken down?
They are broken down because they are too large to be absorbed through plasma membranes and enter into cells.
Why do animals need monomers?
Animals need monomers in order to build its own polymers that make up their own body
All organisms use the same monomers
What is absorption?
Absorption is the absorption of the broken down of nutrients for use by the body
