What are diverticula?

Protrusions from the bowel

Where do you find diverticula

In many sites, mostly the sigmoid colon

If the diverticula be some obstructed..what could happen?

Ischemia

Et of diverticular disease (2 things need to be in place)

1) increased intra-luminal pressure

2) weakened spots in the bowel where blood vessels are received

Risk factors for DD

Ageing ( 80% >85yrs )

Poor diet

Inactivity

Patho of DD

Normal weak spots in the bowel where blood vessels are received

Increased intra-luminal pressure pushes the muscularis mucosa through to the muscularis externa (herniation) causing outpouchings to form

Diverticulosis

Asymptomatic, not inflamed

Diverticulitis

Inflamed, risk of perforation

Mnfts of DD

Full pain, nausea, vomiting, fever

CT

Tx of DD

Address the cause and risks

Sx if obstructed of perforated
