Flashcards in Ecosystems Deck (27):
1

What is an ecosystem?

A natural system made up of plants, animals and the environment.

2

Give a example of a small scale ecosystem

Pond, hedge, woodland

3

Give an example of a large scale ecosystem

Tropical rainforest

4

What is another word for large scale ecosystem?

Biome

5

What is a producer?

Producers convert energy from the sun into energy (e.g. plants)

6

What is a consumer?

A consumer eats a producer, this is where it gets its energy from. Usually eats plants (e.g. snail)

7

What is a decomposer?

Break down dead plants and animals and put nutrients into the soil (e.g. bacteria)

8

What is a food chain?

Shows the direct links between producers and consumers

9

What is a food web?

Shows all of the connections between producers and consumers

10

What causes ecosystems to change?

Global changes (e.g. climate change) and local change (cutting down a hedge)

11

Name one natural way habitats can change

Extreme weather like droughts (e.g. pond could dry up)

12

Name one human cause of habitat change

Cutting down hedges, using fertiliser, cutting down trees

13

Where are tropical rainforests found?

Close to the equator

14

Where are deserts found?

30 degrees north and south of the equator

15

Where are polar ecosystems found?

The Arctic and Antarctica

16

Where are deciduous forests found?

50-60 degrees north and south of the equator

17

Where are grasslands found?

30-40 degrees north and south of the equator

18

Where is savannah found?

15-30 degrees north and south of the equator

19

Where is tundra found?

60-70 degrees north and south of the equator

20

Describe the characteristics of tropical rainforests

Hot and wet all year round
Low pressure
Many plants and animal species

21

Describe the characteristics of deserts

Hot and dry all year round
High pressure
Plants and animals need to be well adapted

22

Describe the characteristics of deciduous forests

Deciduous trees drop leaves in winter
Coniferous keep pines (Christmas trees)
UK is deciduous

23

Describe the characteristics of grasslands

Warm dry summers
Cold winters

24

Describe the characteristics of Mediterranean ecosystems

Hot, sunny and dry summers
Mild winters
Olive trees, lemon trees

25

Where are Mediterranean ecosystems found?

40-45 degrees north and south of the equator

26

Describe the characteristics of savanna

Wet and dry seasons
Dry season very hot- wildfires
Thunderstorms in wet season
Lions and leopards

27

Describe the characteristics of tundra

Low growing plants
Cold, windy, dry
