Edema Flashcards
(38 cards)
What is Edema?
Edema is a disorder of water retention inside the body.
What is the major symptom of edema?
Scanty urine
What type of disorder is Edema?
Water Metabolism Disorder
What are the characteristics of Edema?
Edema is characterized by swelling in the eyelids, face, four limbs, abdomen, and back, or even all over the body.
Edema is more _______ than phlegm or dampness retention.
Superficial
What is glomerulonephritis in Western Med?
Acute inflammation of the kidney, typically caused by an immune response.
What is nephritic syndrome in Western Med?
A collection of different signs and symptoms that occur as a result of inflammation in the kidneys.
What is cardiogenic edema in Western Med?
Edema due to heart-related issues.
What is hepatogenic edema Western Med?
Edema due to liver-related issues.
What causes local or general edema in Western Med?
Malnutrition-related and endocrine factors.
In Yang Edema, the pathogenesis of ______________, the wind impairs the Lung’s function dispersing the water and causing swelling.
Wind attacking the body exterior
In Yang Edema, the pathogenesis of wind toxins + damp heat cause ________.
Fire-Poison from Sores or Carbuncles
What dietary factor contributes to pathogenesis?
Improper diet of eating too much cold, raw or damp-forming foods
What 3 Zang are crucial in Edema?
LU + SP + KI
What lifestyle factors can lead to pathogenesis?
Improper diet, prolonged illness, stress and excessive sexual activities
What is the pathogenesis of Edema?
Failure of the lung to regulate the water
passage (D+D by Wind-Damp, Wind-Heat or Wind-Cold stopping water)
Failure of the spleen to transport and
transform body fluids (living in damp, overeating cold, raw foods, excess pattern b/c water suppresses SP)
Failure of the kidney to regulate water
metabolism (overstrain, over-sex, xu body constitution, chronic disease, can be SP Xu or Ki Xu))
Failure of the urinary bladder to control
urination (can’t control Qi transformation)
All impair Qi activity + fluid accumulation = Edema
What is yang-type edema characterized by?
Yang-type edema is characterized by a short duration, rapid development, and more pronounced edema on the head and face with shiny and thin skin.
What is yin-type edema marked by?
Yin-type edema is marked by a longer duration, gradual development, and more pronounced pitted edema of the lower limbs, with sallow and grayish skin.
What is the treatment approach for yang-type?
The treatment should aim at eliminating pathogenic factors (excess patterns)
What methods are used in the treatment for yang-type?
Methods include diaphoresis and diuresis or purguration.
Strongly reduce manipulation of needles
What is the treatment approach for yin-type?
Support healthy qi to eliminate pathogenic factors.
Half + Half method of reducing + tonifying
If edema is persistent, promoting diuresis by activating blood circulation
and dissipating blood stasis (could be root) is recommended as the accessory treatment.
How can diuresis be promoted in yin-type treatment?
By invigorating the spleen and warming the kidneys.
What are the S/sx of Yang Edema?
Starting from the face (eyes, face) spreads down to the entire body, tight and bright skin, when pressed- no pitting, will also see more exterior syndrome S/sx.
Exterior
Excessive
Acute onset w/ short duration
Caused by: Wind, Fire Toxins or Water-Dampness
What are the S/sx of Yin Edema?
Starting from ankles spreads upwards to the entire body, skin appears loose and pitted when pressed and doesn’t restore, can feel like pressing mud
Interior
Deficiency or mixed deficiency + excess
Gradual onset w/ a long duration
Caused by: improper diet, overexertion, Zang-Fu Xu from congenital or acquired factors
