Q

What reaction does catalase catalyse

A

2H2O2-> O2 +2H2O

2
Q

Describe the method of the practical(catalase)

A
  1. fill a bowl/tray w water and put gas burette in and set at zero.
  2. connect a manometer from base of gas burette to bung of conical flask.
  3. add sol with H2O2 and catalase into conical flask and immediately start a stopwatch.
  4. If temp isn’t being measured sol should be at 20 C
  5. At specific time intervals check volume of oxygen produced and put in table
  6. experiment can be stopped when level of O2 produced no loner increases
3
Q

what is dependant variable(catalase)

A

volume of O2 produced

4
Q

what variables should be controlled catalase

A
  • type/origin of enzyme
  • volume of mixture solution
  • temp.
  • PH
  • Conc.
  • conc. of enzyme(if varying substrate conc is being used)
  • conc. of substrate(if varying enzyme conc is being used)
  • equipment that’s used
  • time intervals for O2
5
Q

How can the rate of reaction be worked out(catalase)

A

Volume of O2/Time

6
Q

What does alpha-amylase catalyse

A

Hydrolysis of starch into maltose

7
Q

How is the rate of reaction worked out(amylase)

A

decrease of starch per unit of time

8
Q

Describe the method of alpha-amylase Experiment

A
  1. prepare water bath at 30C
  2. put equal amounts of iodine/potassium iodide in a spotting tile.

3.form mixture of amylase and starch in
test tube and place in water bath

  1. At regular intervals using a pipette drop in spotting tile
  2. Note colour change, continue until no color change
9
Q

what is dependant variable in amylase experiment.

A

color change of iodine
