How does engine fire detection work?

There is a sensing element made of a thin metal tube (loop) filled with pressurized helium that is routed through the detection zones and terminates in a responder. When this pressurized helium expands, due to high intensity heat, the responder illuminates the appropriate captions on the fire warning panel.

What two functions does the responder have?

o Activate FIRE indication (PIPE ZONE or ENG/WW)

o Activate DET INOP light

What does it mean if the FIRE WARNING is followed by the DET INOP lights?

A fire may have burned through the sensor tube.

What happens if the gas leaks out of the tube?

DET INOP light illuminates (ENG WW or PIPE ZONE)

Halon bottle is either empty or has low pressure.

Two per halon bottle. Each squib fires providing full flow passage for agent discharge.

Explain the sequence for firing the halon bottles in each engine

o Pull the handle that corresponds to the engine on fire.
o Always start with bottle A
o Wait 30 seconds, then fire bottle B

When would you see the green ABLE light and what does it mean in regards to the fire protection system?

o Only on test
o Squibs are ready to fire

Describe the fire detection and protection in the lavatory:

o Fire Detection- generic, battery operated smoke alarm
o Fire Protection- Halon bottle in the trash can activated when temperature exceeds 75˚C

What cockpit lights and alarms would notify the flight deck of smoke or fire in the lav?

o They wouldn’t, there is no cockpit indication for the smoke alarm or halon bottle.
o Only the flight attendant would hear the smoke alarm and tell the flight deck.

How does fire detection and protection work in the Class-C Baggage compartment?

o Fire Detection- Two smoke detectors
o Fire Protection- Two halon bottles. One fully discharges immediately, the other has a timed discharge over 60 minutes.
