enzymes
PROTEINS that function as biological catalysts.
Enzymes are needed to break large molecules to smaller ones
Biological catalysis: speed up a reaction, but do not get used in the reaction itself
They lower activation energy, speeding up the reaction process. They can be reused.
How do enzymes work
Each enzyme has an active site. Each enzyme is different
- The molecule it wants to help change has a substrate
- The active site and substrate must fit together like a ‘lock and key’.
Together it forms an enzyme substrate complex.
Then the reaction takes place (i.e breaking something down) and after the reaction the products leave the active site.
