What is an absence seizure?
An absence seizure is a type of generalized non-motor seizure, characterized by a sudden, brief loss of awareness or staring, usually lasting 5–15 seconds, without warning and with rapid recovery
What is the usual age of onset for typical absence seizures?
Most commonly between ages 4 and 14 years
What is the management for typical absence seizures in children according to NICE?
1st line: Ethosuximide
sodium valproate or lamotrigine are alternatives if ethosuximide is unsuitable or not tolerated
What are the typical symptoms of an absence seizure in children?
Sudden behavioral arrest or blank stare, no response to external stimuli, and no postictal confusion
