Flashcards in Epithelial tissue Deck (14):
1

What is a tissue

Groups of cells that are similar in structure and perform a common or related function.
Also known as the fabrics of our body

2

Four major types of tissue

Epithelial
Connective
Muscular
Nervous

3

Epithelium tissue

Cover surfaces, line body cavities or form glands

4

4 different functions of epithelial tissue

Allow easy passage of materials across the layer
Epithelial protects what lies beneath
Epithelial is waterproof
Epithelial needs to move material over the surface

5

Classifying epithelial tissue

It can be single or stratified
It can be squamous, cuboidal or columnar

6

Function of simple squamous epithelium

Allows passage of materials by diffusion and filtration in sites where protection is not important; secretes lubricating substances in serosae

7

Simple cuboidal epithelium function

Secretion and absorption

8

Simple columnar epithelium function

Absorption; secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substance; ciliates type propels mucus by ciliary action

9

Stratified squamous epithelium function

Protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion

10

Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium

Single layer of cells of differing heights, some not reaching the free surface; many bear cilia

11

Transitional epithelium

Resembles both stratified squamous and stratified cuboidal

12

Epithelial tissue - two different glands

Exocrine and endocrine

13

Exocrine

Secretes into surfaces via ducts.
E.g sweat glands, sebaceous glands, live, pancreas etc

14

Endocrine glands

Secrete hormones that travel around the body in blood (help maintain homeostasis
