When did the slavery happen?
In the 17th, 18th and 19th century
When did the first twenty slaves arrive, and who were they?
- They were servants and were set free after some years of service

What was the main reason for importing slaves to the US?
Their labour was needed. Large plantations of cotton and tobacco required enormous workforces. The plantation owners depended on cheap workers to farm their land

- Until 1954
- A Supreme Court ruling declared that the concept of "Separate but equal" was unconstitutional
What did happen in the 1950s?
The Civil Rights movement began to demand equal rights for all Americans. The movement was led by Martin Luther King and used non-violent
What did Rosa Park do, that made her arrested?
She refused to give up her seat to a white man, because she "was simply too tired"
What happen in 1963?
The march of Washington gathered between 200 000 and 300 000 people, demonstrating for equal opportunities in education, jobs and housing. It was here that Martin Luther King delivered his speech "I have a dream"
Who was the Black Panthers?
A group that rejected non-violent methods.
They used militant self-defense tactics in fighting for black power
