Equations Flashcards
(7 cards)
GMAT favorite equation is:
Total of A = (A’s Per B) * Total of B
Difference between an expression and an equation…
Equations only have an equal sign, they are equating two expressions to one another
4 ways to simplify
- Combine like terms
- Find a common denominator
- Pull out a common factor
- Cancel common factors
Solving one variable equations?
Isolate by using reverse PEMDAS
Solving a system of equations?
- Substitution … rearrange one to be plugged in to the other equation.
Isolate the variable you DO NOT want, as it will be removed
- Elimination…Add or subtract the equations to remove a variable.
Typically easier to add. You can multiply or divide an equation to make it easier to eliminate
Combo questions
What is X + y is really asking..
Refers to combining variables like x+y
Really asking WHAT is X = Y
Discern precise combo they want
Then you manipulate until you get a match to what is asked
What is a potential time sink instinct when dealing with “combo Q’s”
Wanting to solve for a single variable first instead of isolating the combo to one side
Safer to find the “R &R” relation and ratio
