what is erythromelalgia?

A

condition that causes burning pain and erythema (pallor or cyanosis) in extremities

likely due to intermittent blood vessel obstruction and caused by heat, exertion, stress, insomnia, or pressure

can be by primary gene= autosomal dominant gene mutation causing hyperexcitable dorsal root ganglia

secondary: myeloproliferative dx like polycythemia rubra vera and essential thrombocytosis

hypercholesterolemia
autoimmune dx (SLE)
small fiber peripheral neuropathy
sciatica
mushroom poisoning
medications (bromocriptine or ticlopidine

what causes erythromelalgia episode?

A

triggered by heart, exertion, stress, insomnia, or pressure and seen with wearing socks, shoes since generated with heat.

can be seen in symmetric extremities often in lower than upper

A

clinical and no specific diagnostic tests

treating underlying disorder if secondary

aspirin may reduce symptoms in both primary and secondary erythromelalgia
