  • The suffragette campaign was led by Emmeline Pankhurst in 1903 and adopted the motto ‘Deeds Not Words’
  • They were frustrated with the lack of action made by the NUWSS so planned direct action.

….

  • Many believe the NUWSS did not help the fight for womens suffrage due to the fact they were deemed as ‘terrorists’. However, Emmeline Pankhurst argued that they only started to use militant violence after the conciliation bills in 1912.

Changing attitudes towards women

A
  • Women began being elected into political councils. Which presents the idea women were becoming more involved in politics.
  • However, the numberof women being elected was tiny, being only 24 female councillors out of a total of 121,140 males.

  • Historian, Purvis, points out that the NUWSS newspaper sold atleast 20,000 copies a week in 1909.
