Hale is approached by Pinkie and followed by Cubitt. He meets Ida, and after failing to pick up a girl, asks her to spend the day with him. Ida goes to the toilet, and when she returns, Hale is gone

Pinkie sets up an alibi, Pinkie instructed Spicer to leave the Kolly Kibber cards along the route to confuse the investigation. Pinkie is annoyed a card got left at Snow’s and goes to retrieve it, meeting Rose.

Ida reads into the inquest of Hale’s death and is concerned by the inconsistencies in the report. She attends the funeral, then goes to speak to the girl who Hale tried to pick up on the seafront

Pinkie discusses the murder with Spicer as he waits for Rose to turn up for their date. They go to Sherry’s and realise they’re both Catholic. Pinkie returns to his bedsit to meet the rest of the gang and they discuss the murder further. Dallow and Pinkie visit Brewer - a bookmaker who it turns out has been paying Colleoni for protection, so Pinkie attacks him with a razor blade. When they return to Frank’s, there’s a message from Rose

Rival gang leader writes to Pinkie and asks for a meeting at the Cosmopolitan. During their conversation we learn Hale betrayed Kite to Colleoni. Colleoni offers Pinkie a job, Pinkie refuses. As he leaves the hotel, a policeman asks Pinkie to come to the police station, where the inspector warns Pinkie not to let the feud between the gangs escalate.

Ida is now staying at a boarding house in Brighton. She visits bookmakers Tate to put her bet on, hears him talking to Colleoni on the phone. She asks at the pub and finds out about Colleoni and Tate. She then meets Phil Corkery in Snows and gets talking to Rose. Finally, she visits the police to explain her concerns, but they aren’t interested

Spicer is feeling anxious and threatened as a result of recent events. He bumps into Crab, a former member of Kite’s gang, now working for Colleoni. He overhears Rose calling Frank, explaining Ida is in snow’s asking questions

Pinkie takes Rose on a trip to Peacehaven, just outside Brighton. On their return to Brighton, Rose sees Spicer’s photo on a stall on the seafront.

Pinkie suggests that Spicer leave town for a while for a while but says he wants him to help out at the race day un Brighton first. Pinkie phones Colleoni and betrays Spicer, arranging for Colleoni’s gang to kill him at the racecourse
4.1
It is the day of the Brighton Races, Black Boy wins, Spicer’s attacked by Colleoni’s gang and they then attack Pinkie too. Pinkie escapes, hides in a garage, then goes to Snow’s and hides in the cellar with Rose. Pinkie returns to Franks, then calls on Prewitt, the gang’s lawyer, who says that he can arrange for Pinkie to Rose to be married. Pinkie then realises Spicer is in his room

Ida corners Rose in her room and tries to convince her to stay away from Pinkie - Rose refuses to listen
