Evolution 3: slides phylogeny and cladograms Flashcards
(12 cards)
The 8 taxa in descending order?
Life, Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Three parts to Binomial Nomenclature?
Common Name, Genus (Uppercase), Species epithet (Descriptive name Lowercase)
What is Phylogeny?
The evolutionary history of a species or group of species
What is a clade?
A group made up of all the species that are decedents to a common ancestor.
What does a Phylogenetic trees show?
The evolutionary relationship between species over time.
What does a cladogram show?
ONLY the evolutionary relationship between species
How does cladograms and Phylogenetic trees determine which species are more related then others?
Phylogenetic trees look at morphology (body structure, embryo development) & molecular (DNA, RNA, Proteins) similarities. Cladograms just look at shared traits.
Difference between derived and ancestral traits?
Derived are gotten from common ancestor/ most recent, while ancestral are from a previous ancestor.
How many domains are there? (Names)
Bacteria, Archaea, & Eukaryota
What are some defining characteristics of each domain?
B & A are unicellular and cell walls while E have some with those but Nuclear Envelops and membrane bound organelles. Or B & A are prokaryotes while E are eukaryotes.
What is kingdom Protist known for?
Species that are difficult to identify due to extreme diversity
