Describe the synthesis of vitamin D
Epidermal cells produce cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) in the presence of UV radiation.
Liver & kidneys convert D3 into calcitriol to aid absorption of calcium and phosphorous.
What is the function of the arrector pili muscle?
Lift hairs on skin -insulation, goose bumps, compresses & empties sebaceous glands
What are the two types of skin glands?
Sebaceous and sweat
What do sebaceous glands secrete?
sebum
Name the two kinds of sweat glands
Apocrine - secrete into hair follicle
Eccrine - not associated w/ hair follicle
