C6.1 > Extracting Iron > Flashcards

Flashcards in Extracting Iron Deck (11):
1

How is Iron extracted from it's Ore?

Using a large reaction container called a Blast Furnace

2

What raw materials are added to the top of the Blast Furnace?

Iron Ore (eg. Haematite)
Coke (Mostly carbon)
Limestone (purifies the iron)

3

What is forced in at the bottom of the blast furnace?

Hot air

4

How is Coke made?

Heating coal in absence of air

5

What are the 4 raw materials used to make Iron?

Iron Ore
Coke
Limestone
Air

6

What is the main reducing agent in the blast furnace?

Carbon Monoxide

7

What is Stage 1 in extracting Iron?

Stage 1: Coke burns in hot air forming Carbon Dioxide

8

What is Stage 2 in extracting Iron?

Stage 2: More coke reduces Carbon Dioxide making Carbon Monoxide

9

What is Stage 3 in extracting Iron?

Stage 3: Carbon Monoxide reduces Iron (III) oxide to Iron at about 1500 degrees

10

How are the impurities from the Iron Ore Removed?

Stage 1: Calcium carbonate (limestone) decomposes in high temperatures
Stage 2: Calcium oxide formed reacts with silica from sandy impurities to form calcium Silicate

11

What is the Molten Calcium Silicate called?

Slag - it floats on molten iron and both iron and slag are removed separately at bottom of blast furnace
