Bandwagon fallacy
Something is true/good because many people believe so
Ad Hominem // Abusive fallacy
- involves 2 arguers
- 👤 attacks the character of the person making the argument, not the argument itself
Tu Quoque // “You too” fallacy
Reject an argument by claiming the other person is being hypocritical
Straw man fallacy
Misinterpret or distort another’s argument to make it easier to attack.
Appeal to unqualified authority
Support a claim made by an authority who is not an expert in the relevant field, may be biased or have a reason to lie
Hasty generalization
Draw a broad conclusion based on too small or unrepresentative evidence
False cause
👤 believes that just because one event follows another, it is the cause of it (cabalas)
Slippery slope
👤 argues that a small event will lead to many negative ones
Weak analogy
Argument based on comparison between 2 things that are not similar in relevant ways
False dichotomy
👤 presents 2 alternatives as if they were the only ones available, then eliminates the undesirable one leaving the desirable one as the conclusion
Appeal to novelty
👤 assumes something is better because it’s new or modern
Appeal to tradition
👤 assumes that something is true or right simply because it has been done or believed for a long time
