Key ideas
Critical vision of the future resulting from techno scientific advances playing god, hubris and controlling nature.
Today’s threatening monsters come in the form of environmental degradation e.g cloning dolly the sheep, global nuclear war and transplanting pig organs into humans.
Misapplication of science necessitates realistic concerns when the risk of poor human judgement is not accompanied by foresight and cautionary planning.
Allegorical lesson from the Prometheus — trespassing against the sanctity of the divine realm.
Frank explores the ideological vacuum engendered by scientific materialism….
And examines the spiritual bankruptcy of replacing theism with secular humanism.
Vic’s transgression of the natural world results in a reductionism that ultimately leads to existential despair, individual crisis and communal disintegration.
MONSTROSITY OF…
SCIENCE
Frank has become a reference point….
Whenever science intercedes w/the process of nature
- Victor’s sin was to play god, to attempt to create life out of non-life……
‘Life and death appeared to me ideal bounds…’
- tried to apotheosise himself by creating, like Prometheus did, his own living creature who would laud him as divine
‘Cursed creator! Why did u form a monster…..’
- the monster n vic argued over the imago dei
- neither the creature would have suffered loneliness nor the neighbours suffered havoc had victor not played god.
- Spirit of the enlightenment and hubris
‘The world to me was a secret…’
‘I do not remember to have trembled at a tale of superstition’
- Science replaced the womb/ asexual relationship with Liz
‘A new species would bless me as is creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me’ - play god- worship him like an idol without reservation
‘Infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing with vital warmths’
‘Tell me, therefore, whether u object to an immediate solemnisation of the marriage’ - his father putting it forwards not him -arranged?
Victor develops an ‘isolationist attitude’
‘His life w/liz is asexual’
