What is the function of Fluoride Varnish?

To help prevent caries in children

How does Fluoride Varnish slow Caries Progression?

By stopping demineralisation

How does it make enamel more resistant to acid attack from plaque bacteria?

By speeding up remineralisation and when tooth remineralises it does so with fluoride ions making the tooth surface stronger / less soluble

How does Fluoride Varnish inhibit caries?

Stops bacterial metabolising so less acid is produced

How often should Fluoride Varnish be applied?

4 times per year

If residual varnish is visible or if the child has had varnish applied in the past 24 hours, what should you do?

Leave application until the next visit

Child has been hospitalised due to severe asthma
Child is allergic to sticking plaster
Child has Ulcerative Gingivitis (bleeding painful gums, ulcers)
Child has Stomatitis (inflammation of mouth and lips)

What can you do instead of Fluoride Varnish if the child has had an allergy / severe asthma attack?

Use colophony-free varnish
Suggest alternative age-appropriate fluoride preparations

1. Avoid eating or drinking for 30mins after application

3. Do NOT take fluoride drops or tablets for two days after the fluoride application
