Flashcards in Food and Nutrition Deck (30):
1

What are the functions of proteins in the body

Growth and repair and energy in emergencies

2

What are the functions of carbohydrates in the body

Providing energy and storing energy

3

What are the functions of fats in the body

Provide insulation and provide and store energy

4

Name three foods protein is found in

Meat, fish and eggs

5

Name three foods carbohydrate is found in

Pasta, rice and bread

6

Name three foods fat is found in

Butter, oily fish and olive oil

7

Name two minerals

calcium and iron

8

what is the function of calcium

Makes bones and teeth

9

what is the function of iron

Makes haemoglobin for healthy blood

10

Name two foods that calcium is found in

Milk and cheese

11

Name two foods that iron is found in

red meat and leafy veg

12

What is the function of vitamin A

Helps improve vision and keep your skin and hair healthy

13

What is the function of vitamin C

Prevents scurvy

14

what is the function of vitamin D

Needed for calcium absorption

15

Name a food that vitamin A is found in

Liver

16

Name a food that vitamin C is found in

Oranges (citric fruits)

17

Name a food that vitamin D is found in

Eggs

18

What is the function of dietary fibre

Aids the movement of food through the gut

19

Name two foods that dietary fibre is found in

Wholemeal bread and fruit

20

What is the chemical in carbohydrates ?

carbon, hydrogen and oxygen

21

What is the chemical in proteins ?

carbon, hydrogen
oxygen and nitrogen

22

What is the chemical in lipids ?

carbon, hydrogen and oxygen

23

what is the structure of a carbohydrate ?

from starch and glycogen from simple sugars

24

what is the structure of a protein ?

amino acids

25

what is the structure of a lipid ?

fatty acids and glycerol

26

what is the role of enzymes as biological catalysts in metabolic reactions ?

they speed up reactions in biological reactions (metabolic reactions). these include digestion of food molecules, respiration and photosynthesis

27

how does temperature affect enzyme functions ?

as the temperature rises, the rate of reaction increases this is because the molecules move faster and have more kinetic energy. Any temperature above their optimum temperature the rate of reaction decreases because the enzymes have denatured.

28

hoe does PH affect enzyme functions ?

enzyme activity is greatest at the optimum pH for that particular enzyme. Strong acid/alkali destroys (denatures) most enzymes.

29

what should a balanced diet consist of ?

the appropriate portions of carbohydrate, protein, lipid, vitamins, minerals, water and dietary fibre

30

how do energy requirements change for different people ?

an active person needs more energy because they are keeping active and using up their bodies energy, a pregnant person needs more energy because they are having to keep them and someone else alive and eating, a 13-15 year old girl needs more iron than a 13-15 year old boy because they might have their period so they need more blood
