Flashcards in Food Nutrients Deck (23):
1

Carbohydrates

-They give us energy and prevent constipation
- Made up of long chain of simple sugars e.g. starch
Examples include: Sugar,Starch and Fibre

2

Fats

-They give us energy and keep us warm
-Made up of 1 molecule of glycerol and 3 attached fatty acids

3

Proteins

- Good for growth and to repair body tissues

4

Minerals

-Help to keep us strong and healthy

5

Vitamins

-Good to keep us strong and healthy
- Also needed for growth and health

6

Cell

The basic building block of life

7

Tissue

Formed by lots of similar cells working together to perform the same function

8

Organ

Formed by lots of tissues working together

9

Organ system

Lots of organs working together

10

Organism

Is all the body systems working together to form a living thing

11

Mouth

-Physical digestion by teeth
-Chemical digestion by enzymes in saliva

12

Oesophagus

-A tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach by muscular contractions called 'peristalsis'

13

Stomach

- A muscular sac lined with mucus. Food is mixed with stomach acid (hydrochloric acid) and digestive enzymes and churned (mixed up)

14

Liver

- A large organ that produces a green liquid called bile that neutralises stomach acid and helps break down fats into tiny droplets

15

Pancreas

- A gland (leaf-shaped) below the stomach that produces digestive enzymes that help break down food

16

Gall bladder:

- A small sac below the liver. It stores and releases bile into the small intestine

17

Bile Duct:

- Tube like structure which carries bile from the gallbladder to the duodenum

18

Small intestine

-Long thin tube that food moves through after the stomach. Digestive food is absorbed from the Small Intestine into the bloodstream. More enzymes are produced here to break food down further. The blood then transports the nutrients to all body cells

19

Large intestine

-Water is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream from undigested food. Passes undigested food to the rectum.

20

Duodenum

The first part of the small intestine. Receives food from the stomach, absorption happens here

21

Rectum

-The lower part of the large intestine, where the undigested food called faeces (poo) is stored before it leaves the body

22

Anus

-The muscular opening at the end of the digestive system from which faeces (poo) leaves the body

23

The lock and key therory

The lock and key theory is when referring to enzymes and the active sight.
