Q

Phosphocreatine (5 points)

A
  • Resynthesise ATP in the first 10 seconds of exercise.
  • Stored in the muscle cells alongside ATP for rapid access.
  • Limited stores.
  • Dietary sources= red meat + fish.
  • Main source of energy for the ATP-PC system.

Q

Glycogen (6 points)

A
  • Stored in the muscles and liver.
  • Needs to be broken down into glucose before it can be broken down to release energy for ATP resynthesis.
  • Used in both absence and presence of O2.
    1) Anaerobic (60 secs- 3mins)
    2) Aerobic (infinity)
  • Glucose= soluble form of glycogen found in the blood.
  • Dietary sources= complex carbs/ starches.
  • Main energy source for Anaerobic Glycolytic System.

Q

Triglycerides/ fats (6 points)

A
  • Muscular stores of fat.
  • Only work in the presence of glycogen due to unreliable pace.
  • At rest + endurance events it produces 2/3 of the body’s energy needs.
  • 2x more energy than glycogen.
  • Requires 15% more O2- predominantly used in aerobic activities.
  • Main energy source in Aerobic systems.

Q

Proteins (5 points)

A
  • Growth and repair of muscles.
  • Last energy source to be used (emergency rations).
  • Only used when glycogen and triglyceride stores have become depleted.
  • 5% of the bodies energy needs.
  • Dietary sources= meats/fish/dairy.
