What is a predicate? Give an example.
A predicate contains all the parts of the clause relating to the subject, but not the subject. It must contain a finite verb that agrees with the subject.
e.g. [The man from the shop] (subject) [is a monster] (predicate)

Grammar is a system of rules of a language.
Syntax is the arrangement and interelations among words in a sentence.
Define Noun and give an example
Naming word, e.g. a CHANCE
Define Pronoun and give an example
A substitute for a noun, e.g. THEIR last chance.
Define Verb and give an example
A 'doing' or 'being' word, e.g. they LOST the chance.
Define Adjective and give an example
Describes nouns or pronouns, e.g. FAT chance.
Define Adverb and give an example
Describes adjectives, verbs and other adverbs, e.g. a VERY slim chance, she danced DEVINELY.
Define Article and give an example
Specifies definiteness or indefinitenes of a noun, e.g.THE dance, A good chance.
Define Conjunction and give an example
Joining word, e.g. a slim chance AND a very slim chance.
Define Preposition and give an example
Word that positions, e.g. AT the dance
Define Interjection and give an example
Conveys emotion of sentiment, e.g. WOW! What a dance!
When can a word be classified?
When it is seen in context. Some words can act as noun or verb depending on the sentence.
What are the two different types of words?
Form class words and Structure class words.
Define form Class words
Form class words are open or lexical words which contribute content meaning to the text and comprise the central subject matter in dictionaries.
Define Structure class words
Structure class words are closed, gammatical, or function words which contribute gammatical-structural meaning to the text. i.e. they signal relationship between words to make a text cohesive.
What is a Sentence and what does it normally contain?
A collection of words that is grammatically complete by itself and normally expresses a complete idea. It ususally contains both subject and predicate.
What is a Finite Verb? Give an example.
A Finite Verb belongs to the subject of the sentence and shows tense.
e.g. I DID my homework. DO you homework (subject implied)
What is an Infinitive? Give an example.
The main form of the verb using the marker 'to'.
e.g. to sing, to dance
