What is mitosis?
Cell creating a genetically identical copy of itself.
- Somatic Cell division
START WITH ONE PARENT CELL
END PRODUCT = GENETICALLY IDENTICAL DAUGHTER CELLS
1
Mitosis - Interphase
Step One
- DNA is not condensed
- Where a cell spends most of its time
2
Mitosis - Prophase 1 and 2
Step Two & Three
- Spindle begins to form
- Nuclear envelope breaks down
- Centrioles appear
- Chromosomes condense
3
Mitosis - Anaphase
Step 5
- Chromosomes divide and begin to move to the poles
4
Mitosis - Telophase
Step 6
- Spindle breaks down
- Cleavage furrow forms
- Chromosomes are in forming cells
- Nuclear membrane beings to reform
5
Mitosis - Cytokenesis
Final Step
- Two daughter cells
6
Meiosis - Prophase 1
Step 1.1
- Nuclear envelope begins to break down
- Chromosomes condense
7
Meiosis - Metaphase 1
Step 1.2
- Chromosomes align on metaphase plate
- Homologous chromosomes (one set from each parent)
