When and why did the French occupy the Ruhr?

A

1923

  • Weimar stopped paying reparations
  • French occupied the Ruhr (main working area in Germany) so workers couldn’t work
  • Weimar used passive resistance and paid the workers leave
  • This led to hyperinflation

A

1923

  • The Nazi party marched into Munich
  • Hitler forced Kahr (important political leader) to support Nazis
  • The next day Kahr withdrew support and Hitler was arrested and 14 Nazis killed

A

Became Chancellor of Germany in 1923

  • Brought in new currency (rentenmark) where 1 rentenmark = 1000 billion marks
  • Persuaded the French to leave the Ruhr
  • Signed Locarno pact in 1925 (France, Belgium, Italy and Belgium) to not invade each other
  • Joined league of nations in 1926
  • Borrowed lots of money from the US
