Campylobacter jejuni -
Shigella
C. difficile

Staph aureus - meat
E.coli
Salmonella enteritidis
Listeria monocytogenes

Bloods - FBC, U+Es, LFTs, CRP, WCC
Stool sample - MC+S

Campylobacter jejuni

Cause: Unpasteurised milk
Animal faeces (cats, dogs)

Features:
Commonest bacterial diarrhoea
Bloody diarrhoea, fever
Guillain-Barre
Reactive arthritis

Mx:
Ciprofloxacin

Shigella

Bloody diarrhoea, abdo pain, fever
Reactive arthritis

Mx
Ciprofloxacin

Clostridium difficle

Cause:
- Common in hospitals - Antibiotic use
- cephs, cipro, clindamycin
- Faeco-oral route

Features:
Bloody diarrhoea, abdo pain, fever
- foul smelling stool

Mx:
Stop causative Abx
1st: Metronidazole 10days
2nd: Vancomycin

Salmonella
typhi

Causes typhoid fever
Spread via feaco - oral route

Features:
Malaise, headache, cough, constipation
High fever with relative bradycardia
Rose spots: patchy red macules
Epistaxis, splenomegaly
Diarrhoea after 1st wk

Mx
Ciprofloxacin

Causes:
MSM
Hikers
Travellers

Features:
Bloating, explosive diarrhoea, offensive gas
Malabsorption → steatorrhoea and wt. loss

Mx:
Tinidazole

Cryptosporidium parvum

Parasite
Waterborne
Severe acute watery diarrhoea in HIV
Ix - Stool sample
Mx - Paromomycin
