1

What does Catalase break down?

H2O2

2

Why do bacteria use catalase?

to neutralize defense mechanisms, the allows the bacteria to fight against the host

3

What test distinguishes streptococcus from staphylococcus and which is positive?

catalase
Staphylococcus is positive
Streptococcus is negative

4

What does test is used to distinguish between staphylococcus? What is positive?

Coagulase-is not a virulent factor but causes fibrinogen to go to fibrin resulting in clots.
S.aures is positive.

5

What are the main virulence factors of staph aureus?

Protein A
TSST-1
Alpha toxin

6

What are the test done to determine if it is S. aureus?

Gram (+) cocci
clusters
beta-hemolytic
catalase +
coagulase (+)

7

What infections are associated with S. aureus?

skin and soft tissue
PNA (often follows influenza)
endocarditis
osteomyelitis
BSI
food poisoning by preformed toxin

8

What are the 2 strains of S. aureus?

MSSA (methicillin-sensitive S. aureus)
MRSA (methicillin-resistant S. aureus)
