How does C.perfringens cause an infection ?
Spores makes its way into wound, germinates and produces toxins causes foul discharge and pain.
How to prevent C.perfringens and therefore gangrene ?
Clean and debride wounds
What % of adults and infants have c.diff in there gut commensal?
Infants 75% and 3% in adults
What does all clostridium bacterias have in common ?
All hate air and all produce spores
What does CDI stand for ?
Clostridium difficile infection
What are the symptoms of CDI ?
Mild to severe antibiotic associated diarrhoea
May cause pseudomembranous colitis (inflammation on the colon)
What are the outcomes of c.diff?
Pseudomembranous colitis (inflammation of the colon, diarrhoea-offensive smelling, abdominal pain and Fever) can lead to toxic mega colon
Prevention- SIGHT
Suspect that a case is infective Isolation Gloves and aprons Hand washing Test stool for toxin
