Synonyms

A word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same thing as another word

Antonym

Words that are opposite in meaning

Homonyms

Have the same pronunciation but different spelling and meanings. Usually they come in pairs but can be in sets of three or four
ex. Write, right, rite and wright

Malapropisms

The mistaken use of a word in place of a similar sounding one that don’t mean the same thing
Ex. When the man was choking, the waiter used the Heimlich remover on him
Correction: maneuver

Meaning of a word

Connotation

C=connection
Has a feeling/emotion attached to it
Ex.
Home: cozy, loving, comfy

Levels of Language

Formal

Used in appropriate setting- wedding, banquet, formal writing
No contractions or expressions
Use larger words

Informal

Spoken or relaxed English- can include expressions and contractions. Still properly written
ex. Can’t

Slang

Used with close friends in right setting
Ex. Texting
Certain expressions may not be understood from others not in the same environment
