Halogens and Noble Gases Flashcards
What is fluorine?
A poisonous yellow gas
What group are the halogens?
Group 7
Which is the most reactive of the halogens?
Fluorine
What is chlorine?
A poisonous green gas
What is bromine?
A reddy-brown, volatile liquid (also poisonous)
What is iodine?
A dark grey solid that can form poisonous purple vapours
Halogens are diatomic. What type of bonding do they have?
Covalent
Do the melting & boiling points increase or decrease down the group for HALOGENS
Melting & boiling points increase
Does the reactivity increase or decrease as you go down the group for HALOGENS?
Reactivity decreases
Why does the reactivity decrease down the group in halogens?
Electrons in the outer shell are further away from the nucleus
So the attraction force to pull in another electron gets weaker
And if a halogen can’t attract another electron, it can’t react
What do we call a halogen that gains an electron to form a 1- ion?
A halide (e.g. fluoride, chloride etc.)
More reactive halogens will always ________ less reactive halogens
Displace
Could bromine displace chlorine?
No because chlorine is more reactive than bromine
Describe the noble gases
They all exist as colourless gases
How many electrons do the noble gases have in their outer shell?
8 - full outer shell
