A
  • Attend the scene when possible
  • Assign sufficient officers to ensure a thorough investigation
  • Ensure all evidence is dealt with in according to procedures 04-21(gathering evidence), 04-30 (SOCO), 09-01(Property)
  • Request attendance of investigators from CIB, FIS, INT hate crimes as appropriate
  • Contact victim services if required
  • Assure community/victim the matter will be investigated thouroughly and measures will be taken to prevent repetition
  • Advise OIC of relevant facts.

Q: What is required of a Detective initiating a hate/bias crime?

A

A: - Ensure the divisional co-ordinator is advised of significant aspects of the investigation including eReport numbers (eReport to be provided to INT- Hate Crime as well)

  • Consider using search authorities in locating weapons, ammunition, explosives and licences.
  • Where firearms may be a factor notify G&G and treat as firearms investigation (Procedure 05-21)

  • Consider contacting anyone giving the accused access to firearms, licences, permits.
  • consider applying for a weapons prohibition order.
