What is health?
Your physical, mental and social well being and the absence of disease
What is the HLE
Healthy life expectancy- the number of years a newborn child is expected to live in full full without major disease
Morbidity
The state of being ill or diseased, or the occurrence of a disease or condition that decreases quality of life.
What are the morbidity indicators ?
Prevalence- the total number of cases currently in the population at 1 time
Incidence- the number of new cases reported at a certain time
Reasons for high communicable disease in LDC’s
Malnutrition Lack of clean water Poor sanitation - link to education Overcrowding Limited access to doctors Medicine is expensive
Reasons for high non-communicable disease is mdc’s?
Sedentary lifestyles
Unhealthy lifestyle- poor diet
More old people
Alcohol and smoking
Morality
Death. Normally accompanied by cause of death
Organisation that improved health?
WHO- works with governments in most countries to eradicate disease.
Eg- they run a programme of vaccinations to eradicate polio
Why is it difficult to improve health care in LDC’s?
Lower income- less spending on health
Money investing in treatment rather than prevention- education and vaccination
Rely on aid- short term
How does the MDC’s prevent disease?
Vaccines- MMR
Health awareness campaigns- Change 4 life
Providing support services- Stop Smoking
Easily diagnosis- breast cancer screening

Older people- Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, arthritis and heart disease
Young people- sexual health- sti’s
How does job type affect health?
Manual job- secondary- higher risk of accidents- back pain
Exposure to hazardous substances- asthma
Non-manual- stress and anxiety
Also less exercise at desk jobs
How does education affect health?
More educated- Balanced diet Drinking water Regular exercise Negetive affects of TAD
How does the environment affect health?
Pollution- respiratory disease
How is age distributed in UK
Old people living in rural and coastal area- Devon
How is education distributed in UK?
In 2003 18.8% of working age people in North East had no qualifications contrast to South west- 10.7%
How is gender affecting health?
Women- twice as likely to suffer from arthritis, 2 times migraines
Less sport
Men- more alcohol
