Phase I
the first sound heard, which should be a sharp tapping sound
Phase II
a swishing sound that is made as the cuff continues to deflate and more blood enters the artery
Phase III
distinct tapping sounds that are heard as the pressure is released in the blood pressure cuff
Phase IV
the point at which the distinct tapping sounds disappear and usually where the diastolic number is read
Phase V
the point where the sound disappears completely
