Flashcards in Hepatitis Deck (21):
1

What is Hepatitis

Inflammation of the liver

2

Et of Hepatitis

Microbes (virus)
Autoimmunity (10%)
Drugs

3

How many viral hepatitis are there?

A,B,C,D,E (F & G) but those are not as severe.

4

How do the hepatitis' differ from one another?

Virus and transmission,
Incubation period
Carrier site
Severity

5

Hep A?

HAV abs measured
Oro-fecal transmission
Mild and acute
Incubation period for about 1 month
Increased IgM

6

Hep B

More severe
Carrier Site??
Cirrhosis can POTENTIALLY occur
Transmission from blood, bodily fluids (oral, sexual)
3 Abs present Anti HBs, HBc, HBe

7

What is HBs

Surface of the antigen

8

What is HBc

Core of antigen

9

HBe

Core and precore of the antigen

10

Hep C

80% chronic > cirrhosis and hepatocelluar CA

Via infected blood

Common with IV drug users (primarily)

High risk in sex practices (secondarily)

Ab and viral tests for dx > DNA & RNA synthesis

11

Patho of Hepatitis

2 mechanisms cause liver failure

1) IR (inflammation and necrosis)
2) viral injury= necrosis (lysis of the host cell (hepatocyte))

Vasculature and biliary ducts damaged

4 months to heal

12

Mnfts: PRODORMAL PHASE

Lethargy, myalgia, pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, fever

13

Mnfts: CLINICAL PHASE

(5-10 days later)
Mnfts worsen
Enlarged and tender liver
Jaundice and Pruritus

14

Mnfts: RECOVERY PHASE

Acute mnfts subside in 3 weeks
FULL recovery in 16 weeks

15

True or False?
Autoimmune Hepatitis is not as severe.

FALSE

16

Et. Of autoimmune hepatitis

HLA genes on chromosome 6

Environmental (virus and chemical agents)

17

Type 1 autoimmune hepatitis

More common

80%

ANA and anti smooth muscle fibres

18

Type 2 Hepatitis

2-14 yrs

Abs against cytosol and microsomes

19

Mnfts of autoimmune hepatitis

Vary, asymptotic to those of liver failure

20

Dx of autoimmune hepatitis

Exclude: other liver diseases, viral hepatitis

Increased gamma globulins

Biopsy

21

Tx of autoimmune hepatitis

Immunosuppressants

Transplant
